It comprises several integral parts that work in harmony to produce seamless or welded pipes of varying diameters, wall thicknesses, and materials. The primary components of a tube mill include:
Entry Section: This is where the raw material, typically a strip or coil of metal, is fed into the mill. It includes devices for straightening, cutting, and aligning the material to ensure a smooth entry into the forming process.
Forming Section: Comprising a series of rollers or dies, this section progressively shapes the metal strip into a round or other desired cross-sectional shape, forming the initial pipe profile. The number and configuration of rollers vary depending on the pipe size and specifications.
Welding Section (for welded pipes): In this section, the edges of the formed pipe are brought together and welded using techniques like high-frequency induction welding or electric resistance welding, creating a seamless-looking joint.
Sizing and Straightening Section: After welding, the pipe passes through sizing rolls that adjust its diameter and wall thickness to meet precise specifications. Straightening rolls ensure the pipe is straight and free of distortions.
Cooling System: For welded pipes, a cooling system is essential to quickly cool down the welded joint, preventing warping and ensuring structural integrity.
Cut-Off and Trimming: The pipe is then cut to the desired length and trimmed to remove any imperfections or excess material from the ends.
Inspection and Testing: Quality control is crucial, so the finished pipes undergo various inspections and tests, including visual inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), and dimensional checks, to ensure they meet industry standards and customer requirements.
Exit Conveyor: Finally, the finished pipes are transported away from the mill on an exit conveyor, ready for further processing, packaging, or shipment.
These parts, working in concert, enable tube mills to efficiently produce high-quality pipes for a wide range of applications, from construction and infrastructure to automotive and oil & gas industries.
